I learned a long time ago that I'm a visual learner. I have a hard time conceptualizing things, and I really need to see them to fully understand and comprehend. So when it came to planning this house I knew I would need a visual way to put it all together. I saved a ton of pictures of anything and everything that caught my eye, and you know what? For each room I began to notice a recurring piece or theme that guided me in a direction. Then off to Michael's I went! I came home with foam board and spray adhesive and got to work printing and pasting and removing and repasting until I had my visual boards! For some rooms I also did a layout board to play around with furniture placement. What I love about these are that I can also arrange them like the rooms in my house are arranged so I can see how the colors and patterns flow and blend together. If you choose to do these for your house remember that they're are a work in progress- the edges shouldn't be neat and perfect, and the messier the better! They're only for you after all!
If DIY cut and paste isn't your thing and your more tech savvy then check out Corian's Design Moodboards! You have to have one section of your board as a Corian product so it's best for kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, or anywhere else you have a countertop. It's a a lot of fun to play with! You can also print them out or order the moodboard you created in a giant poster size.
I'm an old school girl- I still like to turn the pages on real books- for most things, but I loved combining the two! I can't wait to see them come to life in the new house!
Here are my old school boards for the new house (I really need a name for this house!):

These tools really helped me to see how everything came together, and if your building, redecorating or just playing I hope they can help you too! Plus the kids loved to help me which made for a great "we're bored" end of summer activity! ;)
